Farwiza Farhan is a forest conservationist based in Sumatra, Indonesia and is the founder of HAkA (Forest, Nature & Environment of Aceh), a grassroots NGO striving to protect the Leuser Ecosystem – the last place in the world where tigers, orangutans, elephants and rhinos still roam together in the wild – that is dedicated to strengthening the voice of local leaders and local organisations.
Farwiza’s work with the Forest, Nature & Environment of Aceh Foundation has had a global impact. Not only is her work in the Leuser Ecosystem featured in the Leonardo DiCaprio-fronted documentary ‘Before the Flood’, but Farwiza’s impact on community-driven conservation has also been recognised with the 2016 Whitley Award.
In this fireside chat, we will shed light on Farwiza’s mission to protect, conserve and restore the Leuser Ecosystem through empowering communities, advocating for local communities to stand on the frontline of conservation and employing a holistic approach to conservation.
